Ireland's Universal Periodic Review Concludes

Inline Image

Last week, 6 October 2011, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter went before the UN Human Rights Council for Ireland's first ever Universal Periodic Review.

The hearing saw the culmination of months of work on the part of the Your Rights Right Now coalition, of which the ICCL is a member. Through our nationwide consultations in February and March, the submission to the UN of our 'Stakeholder Report' in April, and through our intensive lobbying of UN member states, the coalition ensured that key questions on Ireland's human rights record were put to the Government on the international stage. Your Rights Right Now joined rights holders and activists in Geneva to witness the hearing, while a live breakfast screening of the event was also held in Dublin's Liberty Hall, where a capacity crowd from across Irish civil society followed proceedings via webcast. NASC and Doras Luimni held similar webcasts in Cork and Limerick respectively.

This e-bulletin provides a roundup of the coalition's activities on the run up to and during this historic hearing in Geneva last week.

The Your Rights Right Now Public Information Campaign

On the run-up to Ireland's Universal Periodic Review, the Your Rights Right Now campaign conducted a concerted public information campaign to ensure that the public was aware of this important moment for human rights in Ireland. The centrepiece of the campaign was a 20m high 'save the date' which which was unveiled on Dublin's Liberty Hall on 22 September 2011 by health rights campaigner Orla Tinsley.
